Don't know it, but could have been wrongly registered on the V5 (there are tons of errors out there) or was originally an auto that's been converted and someone hasn't updated the V5 (simple job to do but most don't bother/think of it).

Can you do it? I didn't think there was a way to do it with the DVLA.

Piece of body lemonade to update things on the V5 (e.g. different engine number) - you fill in the boxes on the back of the first page and send back and they will update it. But on this particular point: I've just checked and the V5 doesn't state whether manual or automatic, so actually it seems there nothing to update, unless it's a hidden field on the database? You could always ring them up to ask if they have it on file or not - whenever I've rung them, I've found them really helpful and knowledgeable.
It's easy to even change stuff like the vehicle class - I enquired with them about changing the 3g I cut in half to build the car-be-cue (one of those projects that may or may never actually happen) and they said I just needed to send in a letter with the V5 and pics of the conversion including showing the VIN applied to the trailer and as long the pics stacked up, they'd change the VIN from a registered car, to a trailer.

Cars that have left the country and come back can also suffer registration issues.
my 2.2vti in crystal blue metalic went to somewhere in europe, and then came back and was re-registered with DVLA.
Its now a 2.0i with the colour listed as blue (When it most definitely is more silver than blue).
