Well I've been playing with thermite today.

If you mix aluminium, sulphur and sand in a 10:12:9 ratio (by weight, all powders of the highest mesh you can get) you should be able to get the door working again. ;)

Boxing day afternoon gave me an opportunity to get on with this again.

New bolts to fix the new coil with;

Image
*most inaccessible bolts ever* :evil: :troll:
I forgot to take a pic before I refitted the intake, but there it as, all back in place;
Image

Next up was the ignition module. New (top) Old (bottom);

Mounting heat sink;
Image

Quick clean up/file flat to remove corrosion;

Back of the new module (shiny!) 8-) ;

Heat sink compound;

Fitted;

Result?
Still has a bloody mis-fire :troll: :evil: :evil: :evil: :evil: :evil:

Need to try and get the car to talk to Lexia to see what's going on (abject failure last time I tried that)

I forgot that actually, the coil and ignition module was to fix the 'only running on 2 cylinders' fault, rather than the small misfire that it's had for ages... So actually, I had fixed what I originally set out to, but it's left me with a fault it's had for ages, which I do need to fix... (massively down on power).

So anyway, some progress yesterday with this one...
After some discussion on FCF (I'll save the detail for that forum rather than here!) I have got Lexia talking to the car (partially).
First result was this;
Image
:shock: NO FAULTS? WTF? You've had the bloody Engine management fault light permanently on for ages! :troll:

Anyway, I ploughed on going into the injection diagnostics;
Image
Image
Yes, well done, that's my car 8-)

Identification;
Image
Errr... :? Interesting... :| :nono:

Read faults;
Image
:evil:

Into this then, to see if that sheds any light;
Image
Image
Image
Image
Image
I've no data to go on, but I thought the ignition advance looked a bit excessive?! :lol:

Anyway, the screen then crashed out (said connection to ECU lost).

Next up, to run through the test options it gives you (limited on this ECU)...
Image
Image
Great :roll:

Nothing worked from then on. I rebooted Lexia, turned the car off and on, no change.
Wiggled the leads around where they connect into the PCI unit and found the RS232 plug ever so slightly loose... Tightened it up et voila!
Suddenly we have logged faults! =D>
Image
And the best thing? It confirmed my suspicion all along that it was probably a knock sensor fault! :-D

Anyway, I ran through the rest of the tests;
Image
Image
All checked out ok.
The injectors are really quiet though, took a lot of very careful listening - I was sure one wasn't working, so resistance checked them (all ok at 16ohm) and re-tested several times before I managed to hear the last one (difficult to get ear close up to that particular one).

So... Knock sensor. Difficult thing to test. All the wiring visibly looks intact. I'll bell it out back to the injection ECU and if that's ok, change the sensor. Hopefully that will be the end of it...

Citroen don't sell them anymore (not surprising - they just bin and delete stock en masse these days :tosser: ) but readily available after market - next day into my local motor factors.

Re: '96 Xantia Activa - nearly there with the ignition probl

Post by wurlycorner » Tue Dec 29, 2015 7:05 pm

Ps, just gone back to edit the title in the first post...
:oops: Didn't realise it had been that long since I started the journey to get it back on the road :oops:

Oh and the reason there was no communication with the laptop at all, was a fuse blown :lol:

The reason it still won't talk to any other ECU's is I'm pretty sure because the OBD2 - 30pin connector harness, is wired wrong internally. I need to see about getting that swapped...

What hardware do you have, maybe the kit I have might work better for you? Yours if it'll help and you want it. ;)

Give me a mo - only ordered the sensor today! (So it'll come in tomorrow, when I'm in London, seeing my sister... :? ) Thursday is the day...

Thanks. It's the latest version of the diagbox firmware and lexia/scantool (Citroen).

The problem is this lead, that goes from the 16pin ODB2 connector to the 30pin Xantia socket (not a pic of my actual lead, but exactly the same)
Image

The pin outs are wrong, as below (mine on the left, one that is known to work with Xantia's on the right hand side)
Image

What harnesses do you have with your setup?

Big update...
:scaredtoss:
I have it!
:shock: :clap:
Image

Ummm... :? That's it though.
Unfortunately not fitted as planned, due to having other Citroen priorities :? :roll:

@vtecmec if you could please check the pin-out on your 30pin adapter harness, that would be awesome, thank you :hug:

Also, if you wanna sell on your set up, let me know and I can stick it on FCF. You'll get a taker on there for a known working setup, definitely. :)
