Chassis - Bush Removal Guide

Post by Ammo » Wed Aug 04, 2010 3:31 pm

Since I've been doing this rather a lot lately I thought I'd post a guide on how to remove a bush.

Ok here we go, everyone ready?

Lets start with a bush

Image

This is the near side rear Lower control arm, it has 3 bushes. The one on the left is where it connects to the chassis, the one in the middle is the where the trailing arm connects and the one on the end is where the shock bolts too. This is the one i'm going to be removing in this guide.

Right I best explain what makes up a bush. Basically a bush consisits of 2 metal rings with rubber holding the 2 together.

In order to remove the bush it has to be done in stages, the inner ring first then the outer ring.

So first step remove the inner ring. Grab yourself a drill and drillout as much of the rubber as you can.

Now depending on the size of the bush you should be able to clamp the inner ring in a vice and rotate the arm to snap any remaining rubber

Image

If that all goes to plan then you can skip the next bit.

If that method doesn't work, then it's time to play with FIRE :D :D

Image

Grab your blow torch and set about the bush to burn any rubber left

Image

Image

Once the flames have gone out stick a screwdriver in there and wiggle it about to snap any remaining rubber (REMEMBER THE CONTROL ARM IS VERY HOT)

Image

Once you have removed enough of the burnt rubber the inner ring should come free.

Image

Now we move onto the outer ring.

This is a bit of a sod to get out as it's forced in with a hydrolic press and is stuck fast.

To remove it grab a hacksaw

Image

and then cut 2 lines into the outer ring, as close to the inside of the control arm as you dare without cutting it. (you can get pretty close)

Image

Next we get to play with a hammer. Using a screwdriver bang it in till the bit you have cut starts to come away.

Image

Then keep going and you should end up with the whole strip removed

Image

Now the outer ring should just knock out

And that's it, you have just removed a bush, now repeat it 15 times and you'll have removed all your bushes
