If the bracket has snapped would it be visible ie would the exhaust hang lower so you could see it

Yeah check the bracket that bolts to the back of the block, it could have gone, Jack the car up, PUT IT ON AXLE STANDS and get under with a torch and have a look, should be able to see if it's snapped off

May well be not that, but worth a look

No, not really, it's held by the manifold and the hanger just behind the flexi pipe

I had exactly the same thing, check the heatshield by the manifold, shielding the alternator area. Also, the manifold heatshield brackets in to the block. My rattle was coming from that area somewhere, can't remember exactly what it was.
